After seeing a few anime, I believe I've reached the stage where I'm prepared to give any anime film or series a go. And seeing robots on the cover piqued my interest, especially because something about the film reminded me of Neon Genesis Evangelion, which it is in some ways, but without all the philosophy, a bit more amusing, and without people you'd want to physically hurt.
The animation is not as immaculate and high quality as in the aforementioned shows, but it has a charm that is somewhat appealing. Similarly, the design of the people, their outfits, uniforms, and the robots and everything feels so distinct, as though it doesn't feel like any other of the obvious many robot…

It is hard to believe that Sunrise’s Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) television series, a pillar of the mecha anime genre and the launching point for “real robot” subgenre, was so poorly received on its initial run that it was cut from the standard 52 episodes down to 43 while under constant threat of being cancelled. Without the unanticipated success of Bandai’s model toy line and a massive rebound during reruns, this legendary multimedia franchise and the other early influential greats that followed, like Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982-1983) and Armored Trooper VOTOMS (1983-1984), may have never been.
Re-edited for a three-part theatrical film release, Mobile Suit Gundam I (1981), Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow (1981), and Mobile Suit…

"That's what I admire about him: he knows he has to fight even if he doesn't want to."
Like the Neon Genesis Evangelion rebuilds, Mobile Suit Gundam I–III re-tells a story we already know: the three films consist primarily of re-cut and re-assembled footage from the television show of the same name, albeit with some changes made and new animation added by director Yoshiyuki Tomino, making the movies something like a director's cut of the show. I haven't seen the show, but despite its setting in outer space, the movie plays like any great Earth-bound war movie: as a treatise against war, as an examination of the fallout of war both on the mind and on society at large.

In terms of pacing, this definitely feels like it’s been Frankensteined out of a third of a tv show. However, every now and then one of the Gundam’s does something unbelievably cool, or Amuro will refuse to get in the mech because the horrors of war haunt him at night, and in those moments the film is great.

AMURO GET IN THE FUCKING GUNDAM!!!

Get in the fucking robot, Amuro.
This Gundam compilation movies are fucking LONG. There's something very apealing about 70's anime.I could've watched the show, but the trilogy was on Netflix and the show wasn't so I'm watching the trilogy. Man are they long though.
Also, why did anime protagonists stop having thick sideburns after the 70's?

Amuro meeting with his mother is one of the most devastating sequences in all of Gundam, not the least of which because of what is to come. One of those perfect moments in fiction where you see everyone's viewpoints crisscrossed against each other while the truth goes sailing over all of our heads.
