Man drowned in Chiang Mai river in suspected suicide (2025)

Police in Mueang Chiang Mai district were alerted to a man who had fallen into a river and drowned near Mengrai Bridge. Emergency services, including local rescue teams and divers, yesterday morning, April 6, supported the search efforts.

Personal belongings were found at the scene, including clothing, a bag with an ID card, a phone, and a tablet. Divers searched both riverbanks and the area where the items were found, locating the body of a 54 year old man, who had drowned. The body was retrieved and taken for examination by medical professionals and police.

The deceased man’s daughter revealed that her father had messaged her on Facebook.

“When I was a child, I once nearly drowned here; today, I will die here.”

Concerned, she tried calling him, but he did not answer. She then went to the location and alerted both the police and rescue teams. At the scene, only her father’s clothes and a parked motorcycle were found.

It is believed that stress may have been a factor in this tragic incident. The police arranged for the body to be sent to the forensic department at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital to determine the exact cause of death, after which the family will proceed with the funeral rites according to tradition, reported KhaoSod.
